Safety

DO NOT use oxygen near any source of open flame such as a lit cigarette, a burning candle, a gas stove, woodstove, or BBQ. Oxygen supports combustion which means oxygen feeds a fire. Combustible items around the fire will ignite, including clothing and skin.
There must be no smoking or open flames in the same room where oxygen is in use or where it is stored. This includes hallways/rooms where your oxygen tubing may be located. Smoking should occur outside the residence.
Northern Respiratory has a zero-tolerance policy. If oxygen safety rules are not followed, the oxygen will be removed.

  • Smoking or vaping around oxygen is extremely dangerous and can lead to fires and severe burns to the body. Ensure there is a strict no-smoking rule in your home. Post the no smoking signs on your front and back door. This not only tells visitors about the rule, but it also ensures the fire department is aware if called to your home.
  • Keep oxygen away from flames, sparks, or any heat sources like stoves, fireplaces, or heaters.
  • Keep oil-based products, such as petroleum jelly, away from the oxygen equipment, as they can ignite in the presence of oxygen. Do not use vaseline or petroleum-based products on your face or in your nose. Water based products should only be used such as secaris cream or KY gel.
  • Keep oxygen away from any item that can spark such as a hairdryer or toaster or friction toys.
  • Always plug your oxygen equipment directly into the wall outlet. Do not use an extension cord.
  • Oxygen cylinders should be stored upright in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and sources of heat. Ensure that cylinders are secured to prevent tipping.
  • Ensure proper ventilation in the room where oxygen is being used. Avoid using oxygen in small, enclosed spaces without proper ventilation.
  • Never try to open, repair or tamper with your oxygen equipment. Call Northern Respiratory instead.
