What is a Sleep Study?
A sleep study is an overnight exam in a sleep centre that evaluates your breathing, vital signs and other physiologic data while you sleep. This study will measure your sleep cycles to determine if the time spent in each cycle is sufficient. This will help diagnose if you have sleep disordered breathing and help specialists prescribe the appropriate treatment. A sleep study will help diagnose:
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea
- Central Sleep Apnea
- Narcolepsy
- Restless leg syndrome
- Sleepwalking
How Do I Prepare for a Sleep Study?
You will want the sleep study to reflect an average night’s sleep. The day of your sleep test, get up at your usual time, eat normally, and take all your regular medications. Try not to do anything that day that may disrupt your sleep such as drinking caffeine in the afternoon or taking a nap. The Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (RPSGT) will provide you with formal instructions prior to your sleep study.
How Long Does a Sleep Study Take?
The sleep study itself is overnight where you will have a full night’s sleep. The entire process can take approximately 8-10 hours. The evaluation and results can take several weeks to be reviewed by a sleep physician.
